XUMO delivers over-the-top (OTT) video-on-demand (VOD) and LIVE digital channels direct to consumers through smart TV, mobile and other streaming devices. Rodd was invited to partner with Xumo to lead their remote and set-top-box hardware and UI experience design programme.
Our role was to help the young brand to cut through the noise of category and stand loud and proud. With an increasing array of tech peripherals commanding space near the TV, Xumo needed to claim their own space and ensure their brand real estate was ‘top of the stack’. To enable this, Rodd created ‘Pebble’ a set-top-box with a unique identity and iconic asymmetric form factor.
We felt that it was important that the design direction needed to break away from the ‘silver and black’ ID norm, prevalent in the set-top-box market at the time, and create a device that could compliment the domestic surroundings it was to inhabit. The small format, and expressive use of fabric, not only provided technical advantages, but created a unique stance for this young brand.
The matching remote was designed to create an in-hand experience that complimented the flagship onscreen user experience which was delivered through a tablet or smart device. The handset was designed to create a bespoke experience depending on use; delivered through a small adaptive keypad, the user is presented with interface choices based on the ‘mode’ that they are in; such as messaging, browsing or listening.Share +
