When our long-term client DKB called on us to help them break into the Spiralizer market, we seized the opportunity to innovate an intuitive product that would be a joy to use, waste less and be easier to clean.
In projects like this, innovation is always best informed by simple observation, discussion and getting into the kitchen with people. Very often, the answers to seemingly challenging innovation projects are hiding in plain sight.
Through hands-on user research, we discovered that most spiralizers on the market were cumbersome, costly, and the set-up and even risk of injury were a barrier to adoption. Plus, the amount of produce going to waste felt counter-intuitive, and the fuss of spearing veggies before spiralizing was causing frustration.
Anchored by empathy, we approached the brief with a vision of solving these core challenges for consumers. Key to the process was observation - after all, our aim was to create a product that aligned with natural behaviour, so it was vital that we test our design in a natural setting and adjust it accordingly.
Equipped with user insights, we crafted an affordable yet distinctive product that would be perfect for people of all skill levels.
The result is the Zyliss Vegetable Spiralizer - an intuitive tool that consistently creates perfect ribbons and spirals of your favourite veggies. Consisting of just three carefully designed parts - a dual side blade for perfect ribbons or spirals, a unique veggie pusher that keeps your hand safely away from the business end and a unique quick release lever that converts the entire product to three easy to wash components in seconds.
To engage the screw thread, the user simply has to grip the product. This means users can spiralize veggies directly into a bowl or a saucepan and benefit from less fuss, less waste and less mess. Easy dis-assembly combined with a double-sided blade makes switching between ribbons or spirals simple, with fewer parts to lose.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Finally, people could clamp down on carbs and load up on veggies without the costs or inconvenience of tabletop contraptions. As for DKB, their goal was achieved. Thanks to our work, they now had an affordable, convenient and highly innovative product to break into the buoyant spiralizer market.
