Brief
The TVonics DVR-150 is a stylish Digital TV Recorder, which allows Analogue CRT, LCD, Plasma and Projection televisions to record and store Free-to-View digital television and radio channels.
TVonics, designers of state-of-the-art digital set top boxes and flat screen digital televisions for the European market, commissioned Rodd Industrial Design as their design development partner to bring their second innovative product to market.
Following the launch of their first product ‘Prism’, (an innovative set-top decoder that is sold through specialist electronics retailer Dixons) TVonics wanted support from external industrial designers to help ensure the success of their first Digital Video Recorder (DVR).
Rodd Industrial Design worked alongside the in-house team of highly skilled hardware and software design specialists to create a distinctive design language in readiness for the high street consumer market.
Background
As a starting point TVonics designers presented the Rodd team with an electronics package and a basic mechanical concept to design around.
After an initial concept phase a design direction was selected for development. ‘Intake’ the name given to Rodd’s bold front fascia design was thought to be suitably distinctive in what is a predominantly conservative ‘boxy’ market place.
As the design developed, Rodd supplied CMF (Colour, material and finish) visuals to TVonics this allowed them to keep their end customer in the development loop and ensure that they had a positive buy in long before tooling commitment was needed.
A strong monotone colour scheme was selected as the preferred approach at launch; a scheme that senior buyers indicated would continue to transfer across from the MP3 market place into the Hi-Definition TV marketplace during Q1 2007.
Rodd developed A-surface CAD data to produce highly finished visual appearance models for final customer approvals. Once this was ‘rubber stamped’, manufacturing data was produced of each complex component and a dialogue with intended production vendors was opened.
Results
The DVR-150 has now secured high volume production orders with a number of leading high street electronics retailers. Early indications are that TVonics will achieve their objective of significant sector penetration in the digital terrestrial television market place.
“At TVonics, we constantly strive to offer the best technology to our customers. A car company, which has a fantastic engine and drive train, needs a beautifully designed body shell and paint finish to enable the driver to truly feel proud of owning the car. The same is true for modern consumer electronics. The product no matter how well it performs, needs to look great in the home. Working with Rodd has brought that essential element of style to match our innovative technology”Paul Fellows – CEO, TVonics Limited.
"The DVR-150 is an almost perfect blend of form, function and value".
